Providing Home-based Palliative Care During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care, in partnership with our community agencies, continues to provide care and support to our patients and their caregivers during this COVID-19 pandemic. Our goal is to continue to provide seamless palliative care to patients, while focusing on the health and safety of patients, caregivers and those providing care. The cases of COVID-19 may fluctuate over the coming months, but it is important to maintain a consistent practice based on public health recommendations.

While virtual care (phone or video) continues to be part of our practice, we know in-person visits are essential to providing high-quality palliative care. Just as we are all being asked to wear masks and practice physical distancing in public spaces and hospitals, this is also important in your home while you are receiving care. The health and safety of you and our team is critical to us, and so we are asking you to follow the recommendations we have put in place:

  • Wear a mask during the visit.
  • Maintain physical distancing of at least 2m as much as possible.
  • Limit the number of people in the room to avoid overcrowding.
  • Consider opening windows/doors for ventilation when possible.

Before each in-person visit, your physician will screen you and your caregivers to ensure you do not have any COVID-19 symptoms or risk of exposure.

In addition to virtual and in-person visits, your physician may set-up a hybrid visit, where the initial part is done virtually and then an in-person visit is scheduled a short time later to complete the assessment.

This is a challenging time for us as a community, but at the same time, we have been inspired by the resilience of patients, caregivers, and our team. Keeping everyone in the community safe continues to be our priority as we provide care.
